MICHAEL POMARICO

PRINCIPAL-IN-CHARGE - ARCHITECT, NCARB, ASHE

Michael possesses over 38 years of extensive hands-on planning, design and administration of construction for healthcare facilities and medical environments and has performed services well over $1.5B in healthcare systems architecture.

Over the course of his career, Michael has programmed, planned, and designed virtually every aspect of the healthcare delivery continuum. These include assisted living facilities, medical office buildings, highly specialized medical systems in over 27 CardiacCatheterization/Electrophysiology Labs, Angiography, PET/CT Rooms, Linear Accelerators, MRI/CT installations, surgical and integrated operating rooms, clean rooms, pharmacies, and other sophisticated diagnostic and treatment program areas. Additionally, he has designed facility master plans for 6 hospitals.

Michael has worked with more than 36 health care clients and has been involved in or completed well over 2,000 unique projects, studies, and analysis, many of which were performed for repeat clients. Having dedicated his entire professional career to the understanding of the healthcare delivery process, environment of care and all technical aspects of hospital systems design, he has complete understanding of building and life safety codes, regulatory requirements and healthcare construction techniques, including extensive experience with health department submission and review processes.

Michael is accredited by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and is a member of the American Society of Healthcare Engineering and is a member of local ASHE Chapters in both NY and NJ. He currently sits on the Center for Health Design Environmental Standards Council which is engaged in ongoing standards-related initiatives with the Facility Guidelines Institute, Joint Commission and other accrediting and regulatory agencies. The ESC is a volunteer group committed to improving the regulatory standards of the Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities. Michael is also Cal OES Safety Assistance Program Certified to provide professional architectural assistance to local governments in safety evaluation of the build environment in the aftermath of a disaster.

Michael was honored by the New Jersey Alliance for Action in February 2013 for his innovative creativity and design on a leading healthcare and construction project at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley. He recently co-presented at the 2021 Healthcare Design Expo with The Center for Health Design's new Functional Programming Process Guide will help facilities marshal their forces and coordinate those collaborative efforts to develop a functional program to inform decision-making. Additionally, he was published in Outpatient Surgery Magazine (2007) where he contributed to the article “What will your OR look like in the year 2017” and in Electrophysiology Lab Digest (2007) for “Cath Lab and EP Lab Design Concepts”. 

In addition to PDS Architecture, Michael incorporated HealthRisk Technologies (“HealthRisk”) in 2004. HealthRisk is a firm dedicated to the advancement of monitoring and analysis of healthcare environments and has written software designed to improve the monitoring of life safety and infection control in the healthcare environment of care. He has proven experience in the development of Infection Control Risk Assessments, Interim Life Safety Measures, Construction and Renovation Policy and Procedure Manuals, Life Safety Survey’s, Statements of Conditions and Hospital Cost Center Management. Additionally he has mastered the capacity to successfully integrate this experience into project design features and construction documents to ensure life safety throughout the healthcare environment upgrade process.
